SD Cards

The R36S has 2 microSD card slots. Users can choose between a 1 card and a 2 card setup (explained in most guides). TF2 slot does not recognize every SD card brand.

Recommended SD card sizes

1 card Setup: 128GB

2 card Setup:

  • TF1: 16-32GB
  • TF2: 64-128GB

TF SD card slots

  • TF1 = OS Card Slot (right) - can store the firmware + roms
  • TF2 = Roms Card Slot (left) - only for roms

TF2 Compatibility ⚠️

ℹ️
Info
Any SD card should work in TF1 slot ✅
ℹ️
Info
Not every card will work in the TF2 slot ⚠️

These are also working in the TF2 slot:

  • KODAK UHS-I U3 V30 A1 - 64GB - ✅
  • HP mx330 Class 10 U3 - 64GB, 128GB - ✅
  • Patriot EP V30 A1 U3 - 128GB - ✅
  • Integral UltimaPro V30 A2 U3 INMSDX512G-180/150V30 82-39-24 (Purple card) - 512GB - ✅

There are a lot of fake or bad quality microSD cards sold on AliExpress and Amazon. For an in-depth testing of various microSD cards you could check The Great MicroSD Card Survey.

Here are a few reliable options picked by the community.

Amazon - Amazon ~€20 Samsung Evo/Pro plus 128GB
Amazon - CeX - Amazon ~€30 ~£20 Samsung Evo/Pro plus 256GB
Amazon - CeX - Amazon ~€10-60 ~$40-45 (128GB) ~£12-15 (128GB) Kingston Canvas Select Plus microSD Card 64-512GB
Amazon - Amazon ~€10-30 ~£20-25 Netac 32-256GB

Some listings you'll find on AliExpress, Amazon, TEMU, etc. will likely have low-quality and fake flash storage hacked to report a capacity that is bigger than what it actually has. If you were to transfer, let's say, a 16GB file to a microSD card/any storage device hacked to report 2TB but only has 8GB capacity, the file would get corrupted.

Here's a link to a couple videos by Atomic Shrimp on fake flash storage.

AliExpress

AliExpress ~5-20€ KODAK UHS-I U3 V30 A1 32-256GB
AliExpress ~5€ KODAK UHS-I U3 V30 A1 64GB
AliExpress ~5€ HP mx330 Class 10 U3 64 - AVOID THE 128GB/256GB VERSION!

Dual SD card guide

Advantages of a dual SD card setup:

  • If the OS somehow gets corrupted or defect or if you break something while tinkering, it's easier to replace/re-flashing the cfw. No need to re-copy all the roms/scraped images.
  • Your saves/retroarch configs are stored on the roms card. They are safe there in case a update goes wrong or the OS card fails.
  • You can easily swap between cards, if you have more than one rom/OS card.
  • You can swap rom cards between devices that have different display panels.
